- List references.
Instead add, "References available on request."
- Add a photo.
(Unless you're a model or actor.)
- Include anything personal.
By law, you don't have to explain your age, sex, race, marital
status, family size, or handicaps to anyone.
- Imply anything about
salary.
Hold off any discussion of salary until after you've received an
offer for the job.
- Write in paragraphs.
Use bulleted lists instead. (You're reading a bulleted list
now.) Keep sentences shorter than 10 to 12 words.
- Exaggerate or Lie.
Sooner or later, they'll know you did.
- Be Shy.
Of all the times to
"toot your own horn," THIS IS IT.
- Go Over One Page.
Be direct and brief, and keep it short. If it won't fit on one
page, no more than two.
- Get Fancy.
Don't use fonts or type that are difficult to read.
- Use Negative Words
Avoid words like, "arrested", "boring", "fired", etc. You can
explain these at your interview.
DO:
- Be Specific.
Give examples if possible.
- Double Space Between
Sections.
Single space within sections.
- Be positive.
And enthusiastic.
- Use strong action verbs.
And remove adverbs (words that end in "ly").
- Type It.
Electric typewriter or computer, one or the other.
- Proofread.
Ask someone else to look it over as well.
