Audra on Ice
Frank and I left home in the
wee hours of the morning in February to head to Audra State Park,
specifically making the trip to photograph Alum Cave - frozen. Water
runs through the cave in all seasons, and we knew the winter exposure
would make the cave a frozen wonderland. We got what we wanted, but
didn't think to wear spiked-soled shoes...

This shot is from a picnic area below the bridge. This is what the swimming area looks like in the winter.

The path to the cave gave us some idea what we would find when we got there.

All the water that formed the ice wall also ran along the paths of the trail. There's just as much ice beneath the snow at our feet.

As we had hoped, we found Alum Cave filled with icicles and ice formations.

The walkway, usually the easiest section of this trail, turned out to be quite a challenge in some places.

Frank came out of the 'walkway ice tunnel' on his feet. I, not as confident, slid down this section on my backside.

We never made it to the rest of the trail. The inclined section of the walkway leading out to the stairs - partly blocked by an icicle - held us back.
