Lisa, I have read some of your work, you write a good essay, but I am unable to research the topic of this piece, due to the fact that CalPatty Press is off line. I don't know if there would be a great deal of interest among my reader when it comes to a small town blog, but I though it was worth a look.

Anonymity also shields whistleblowers. It shields spouses in abusive relationships who want to seek help from others in the safety afforded by anonymity...

...and it shields CalPatty Press.

If you outlaw stupidity, everyone will go to prison. I suppose the last person to enter his/her cell can toss the key out the window. It would solve every social ill.

Interesting point. And yet, other countries have implemented such laws, as have some states. The anonymity challenge is one I never fully considered. I am sure, if anonymity was not an option, people wouldn't dare to go so far as they do.

Your point about liability is your strongest argument.

However, existing (or newly legislated) laws regarding liability are (or could only be) *national* laws, while the internet is an international phenomenon.

Internationality raises questions about enforcement, jurisdiction, penalties, collections.....etc. Who pays for that 40 million miles of red tape. Who pays for the Internet Police Department (IPD), their health-care, and pensions?

Examples sometimes help.

If little Caroline in Tennessee is picked-on by Guenter from Norway, do the Internet Police break down his door and shoot him? Do they fine him (how much)? Imprison him (where)? Can they cross borders in search of their quarry?

Can Chinese IPD agents break down your door and take you to Beijing to stand trial for saying that Weizhing Hong has a large head?

West Virginia, by not challenging anonymity is demonstrating uncommon sense during a period when sense seems to be in short supply, worldwide.

Hi Whittle ~
Thanks for the comment. I go as long as I can without looking at their site -- it's like quitting cigs. You go forever, then you just have to have a hit, even though you know they're nasty. There are problems pressing charges -- no internet harassment laws in this state, and CPP is anonymous. Who do you charge if the laws did exist?

I do not suggest that other's words should be suppressed because I disagree with them. What I suggest is that everyone be equally liable for their words, accusations, etc, -- just as print journalists are. Print journalists have boundaries - and good ones support what they write with actual (not made up) quotes, with documentation, etc. Journalists, though some may disagree, are supposed to be objective, factual, and not malicious.

Thanks for the alternative suggestions.

High-tech Soap-Opera.

Pro tip: turn off the PC and go outside. Look around. That bright ball in the sky is called "Sol". Listen. Do you hear any disparaging remarks? Of course not. You'll only find them if you seek them out, and one must seek rather diligently to find these blogs you speak of.

Why do you read them?

The internet is as full of the ugly, bitter, and spiteful side of humanity as it is full of the wonder, wisdom, and humor of humanity. Time spent seeking the one is time lost seeking the other. No?

An oft-overlooked feature of PCs: they can be turned off.

You actually looked into whether you could press charges against these characters? For a former reporter, I'm surprised that you'd suggest that other's words should be suppressed just because you disagree with them. I'd rethink that strategy if journalism is something you might one day put on a resume.

Try these blogs instead. They're not (as much a) waste of time.

We already do that here. In fact I hardly find the want to watch a movie. I have been increasingly more careful of what articles I choose to read too. Some really seem to serve no purpose except to discourage and shock and awe. Ratings... I really dont care about ratings, I'm right there with you with all the trash and the automatic ADD commercail breaks! I do admit I miss PBS and national geographic. but now I just watch videos on the web.

Greetings, Lisa, from another Census crew leader, in Ohio! :)

I've found that my experience mirrors yours pretty well. I have 13 enumerators in my group, and two great CLA's who help me every step of the way, but it's still *unbelievable* how much there is to do! And the fact that so much has to be handwritten takes up oodles of time.

I find it's hard for those outside the Census to see quite what's involved -- why you don't have a "schedule", why you can't always commit to plans with any degree of certainty, etc. And one of the hardest challenges is not having a fixed office to operate out of -- I can't just call a meeting and have everyone show up in 10 minutes, like I could at a "regular" job. Also, anytime anyone working under you is working, you're working too -- as you never know when a problem might arise that requires your attention. So feels like I'm always at work even when I'm not at work...LOL

We're now in the follow-up mode, which means I'm doing more fieldwork myself, which I find I rather enjoy.

Like yourself, I do like that people I work with, and hope that's the experience that stays with me once all the craziness of the operation is through! :)

Take care and I hope you'll post more when you get the chance (during all the immense amount of free time you have...LOL)

Lisa, I'm an enumerator over here; my first census work. In my crew, we have two ex-cops (I'm one of them) and a nurse, all with fingerprinting experience. I was sorely disappointed that no one made any effort to identify people with prior fingerprinting experience and use them. It would have sped up that entire process a hundred-fold. Even better would have been to secure at least one scanner per LCO, and give everyone enough time to get in and have them scanned.

I would have liked to have seen the practice interviews done as videos too, instead of having our trainer read them. He's a decent guy, very good supervisor, and fair trainer. But he is NOT a role-player. :)

Other than that, our training has gone pretty well. Looking forward to hitting the bricks next week.

Hello, I was born and raised in Ohio. It's pretty north to me and I see exactly what you are talking about all the time! That's just how it is. My parents were born and raised in Roane County West Virginia so I have always came down there and visit. I thought it was amazing that people you don't know just smile and wave at you as you drive by! Well in the big city you don't know who you can trust, there are so many different types of ethnic folks here and they "Stick" together so if you don't know them you don't acknowledge them! Just they way it is! Don't get yourself into trouble or need something from a neighbor because you will die waiting on help around here in most instances. We need more West Virginians in Ohio! Or more people like them! I am glad my parents taught me the WV ways!

My youngest son is at WVU now. His opinion is that over half the population of the school is from New Jersey. Northern people seem to react differently than we southerners do. I noticed it when attending conferences--shop workers would not say thank you or meet your eye. If you looked people in the eye on the street most of them immediately avoided eye contact. Talking to strangers in line, like we do here? I was looked at like I was a crazy woman. So if many students are from "north", they carry their customs with them. If you travel down south, say to Charlotte or Savannah, you will find the people very like WV. I think the difference might be the sheer numbers--so many people on the East Coast crowded into small spaces.

That's just my personal observations. I'd be interested in how someone from up north might think about it, if they see the difference or not.

I found your blog by doing a Google search for Wv and egg permits. I enjoy reading each new issue of Two Lane Livin' but hadn't realized there was a blog, too. I pick mine up most often from Southern States in Spencer, but have grabbed it other places as well. I read each issue from cover to cover. Keep up the great work!
~Jenny~
Ps. Hope this doesn't post two comments from me, but the first didn't seem to go through!

Hi, I hope this post doesn't show up twice, if it does, just delete it. I just posted and it didn't show up. I agree, it does feel good to have all that food put up for the winter. But I am glad fall is here and maybe I can rest for a while from all the canning, freezing and jelly making. Now we just have to hope we don't have an ice storm and have the electric go off for days and then worry about what's been 'put up' in the freezer. Oh, I didn't know you had to have an egg permit to sell eggs, I guess you learn something new every day.
